In the space environment, the molecular contamination of the surfaces of the satellites constitutes a major problem by the modification of their optical or thermo-optical properties. In the presence of UV radiation, degradations can be aggravated by the photochemical binding of contaminants. The work presented therefore concerns the physico-chemical modifications of the contaminants under the VUV irradiation (ultraviolet vacuum: 100-200 nm) resulting in this fixation. In order to understand the mechanisms of these modifications, we performed contamination and irradiation experiments with pure contaminants. The formation of products under irradiation has been mass characterized in situ and ex situ by morphological, optical and chemical methods.
