The growth of the cattle herd and the advance of the pioneer fronts are two poorly known processes in the Brazilian Amazon, but which pose with seriousness the question of the sustainability of territorial development in this region. To understand this situation and to show possible solutions, the author develops a functional analysis of the beef sector: the systemic approach makes it possible to decipher the complexity of the relations between actors, and to analyze the influence of each sub-sector on the individual and collective strategies. Then, he proposes a conceptual analysis of the Amazonian pioneer fronts, to show how the cattle industry fits in this space system under construction, and determine its evolution.
