Unafraid to stand apart, James Dyson has always done things differently. After toying with classics and art at school, he studied furniture design at the Royal College of Art. But instead of dowels and drawers, he found engineering. And with it, his passion. In 1978, dissatisfied with the performance of his new Hoover Junior, James had an idea. He'd spotted a local sawmill using cyclone technology to separate sawdust particles from the air. Could this work on a vacuum cleaner? James ripped off his Hoover's clogging, stinking bag and replaced it with a crude cardboard prototype of his cyclone design - and it worked. Fast-forward over two decades. Dyson has grown from one man with one idea, to a global technology enterprise of over 10,000 people. Nearly half of them are engineers. From acoustic to robotic, software to electronics, they use their diverse skills to solve the problems others ignore. Every year, the UK faces an annual shortfall of 59,000 engineers. Failing to address it could cost the UK economy £27 billion every year from 2022. Very simply, we need more. Feeling strongly that bright young minds shouldn't miss out on an engineering career, as he nearly did, James set up the James Dyson Foundation in 2002 to challenge misconceptions about engineering and combat the shortage. The demand for engineers isn't limited to the UK. We need them all over the world. The James Dyson Foundation launched in the US in 2011 followed by Japan, Malaysia, the Philippines and Singapore. The Foundation also runs activities in 21 other countries and regions, encouraging young people from across the globe to pursue an engineering career. The Dyson Institute of Engineering and Technology teaches the next generation of engineering enthusiasts: people with a passion for solving problems and a fascination for how things work. Students at the Institute work towards a degree in engineering, while holding a real engineering job in Dyson's cutting-edge Research, Design and Development department. They are Dyson engineers from day one. Intelligently reports performance in real time. The screen displays selected power mode, remaining run time, filter maintenance reminders and blockage reports. Dyson's battery technology and battery-saving trigger help to provide our longest run time by only using power when you need it. An integrated digital motor spins the brush bar up to 60 times a second. It drives stiff nylon bristles deep into carpet to remove dirt, and carbon fibre filaments capture fine dust on hard floors. Monitors system performance 8,000 times a second, then reports in real time on the LCD screen. Three cleaning modes optimised for a variety of tasks. The right balance of power and run time, where you need it. The 'point and shoot' mechanism hygienically ejects dust and debris deep into your bin, in one action â so there's no need to touch the dirt. The Dyson V11 vacuum drops into the wall-mounted dock, to charge it and tidily store tools. So it's ready to grab and go. The seven-cell nickel-cobalt-aluminum battery has the fade-free power to clean here, there and everywhere around your home. The most powerful suction of any cord-free vacuum. 14 cyclones generate forces of more than 79,000g to fling microscopic particles â such as pollen and bacteria â into the bin. The fully-sealed filtration system traps 99.97% of particles as small as 0.3 microns â expelling cleaner air. Designed to absorb vibrations and dampen noise, to keep sound levels down. The motor, bin and cyclone are aligned, so air is drawn into the cyclones in a straight line â helping to create powerful Dyson suction.
