The works in this book provide evidence of what, in 1843, the painter Sir David Wilkie called `The taste for art' in Scottish culture. They highlight the influence and importance, both at home and abroad, of artists such as Allan Ramsay, who was born and trained in Edinburgh and became painter to the King, and later figures such as David Roberts, John Phillip, Alexander Nasmyth, Kenneth Macleay and James Giles. An excellent book, well worth reading for an insight into the war experience of a German boy. * Everyone's War 16/03/2015 * Another outstanding book told as it is, warts "n" all with all the tears and snot and mud and filth you"d expect from a boy at war in Nazi Germany. Again, to me, this is history told by those who were actually there and that simply can"t be beaten. It"s graphic, funny, sad and tragic and yet somehow it"s written in such a way as to be relevant and relatable. * War History Online 12/01/2014 *
