The present volume deals with problems and chances of life, beyond adequately remunerated and recognized work, in a society that depends on the ideal of full employment. People whose educational and employment opportunities are limited for a variety of reasons encounter this situation in part very creatively and productively. My concern is to point out that young people with and without a secondary school leaving qualification at the thresholds to the labor market and people who make their living without recognized gainful employment do not qualify as the new precariat (Muller-Hilmer 2006), as the superfluous (Bude / Willisch 2008 ), as the excluded (Bude 2008) or as simply depended (Klinger / Konig 2006) must apply. For that I went in search of individual, social and structural potentials of participation in work, in material security, in consumption, in advocacy, in a recognized status and in the participation in social structures and networks. I am confronted with a wide range of forms of life beyond recognized or suitably paid work, as well as various problems following exclusion from the labor market. Discussions on post-school inclusion and exclusion of individuals with individual disabilities and social disadvantages are largely determined by the topic of paid work.
