Book Description
This book illustrates the dialectic relationship between state and private enterprises since the late 1970s in China. The framing of market-oriented intellectuals largely contributed to the legitimization of private enterprises in the 1980s. The great wealth generated by the private enterprises also strengthened the fiscal capacity of the state, which in turn led to an increasingly interventionist state driven by intensive regional competition in economic growth. The revival of private enterprises occurred in the margins of the state economy. Zongshi Chen argues that the political connections of private entrepreneurs became more important in coastal enterprises than elsewhere, illustrating the strength of state capitalism in the coastal region.
