Book Description
Calculating drag and its components with acceptable accuracy is still a challenge for aerodynamicists. The huge financial interests at stake in the prediction of the drag, and hence its reduction, have made it a major area of research. In the last twenty years numerical computation has proved to be a reliable and more economical option than wind tunnel tests on scale models. Moreover the numerical approach allows us to study the flows around the bodies in a more exhaustive way. It is in this context that the subject of this study is situated, which explores the capabilities and limitations of CFD Fluent software in terms of computation and drag decomposition for real viscous flow. The ultimate objective of this thesis is therefore study the global drag and its components for three-dimensional transonic cases by comparing several approaches of calculation and decomposition. The results obtained are compared with the experimental results. Theoretical approaches for calculating drag and its components are evaluated.
