Book Description
Every year a large number of digital games appear that use historical productions - in various forms of game mechanics, with a broad spectrum of content and from almost all eras. So far, she has not had a structured overview of historical science, has not formulated any knowledge interests, and has not systematically developed them. The book explains in an introductory manner why such productions are historically and socially relevant. Its main part arranges the state of research statistically, methodologically and disciplinarily as well as along game forms and epochs. Using many examples, he identifies the gaps in the discourse, condenses knowledge interests and involves other humanities and social sciences. Online role-playing games have so far been largely ignored, although the empirical part uses The Secret World as an example to demonstrate its quality as a cultural knowledge system of memory. How this medium stages history is socially significant, but also in economic terms. The book therefore opens up a field of work for students, teachers and researchers in history and other humanities, but also opens up new approaches for practical application in game design.
