Book Description
The Central Andes present a multitude of biogeographic environments that evolved at different rates during the Holocene. The objective of this book is to define and characterize the current biogeographic stage of the Puna and to study the changes in vegetation during the Holocene. The geosystems surrounding the Nevado Coropuna volcano are mapped. According to our results, the holocene dynamics of vegetation in southern Peru follow the following pattern: between 9750 and 5255 years BP cal, species characteristic of the upper Puna dominate the plant cover and are associated with a wetter climate and more cold than the current one. Between 5255 and 3000 BP years, the plant cover is dominated by shrubs of the Puna sensu stricto. During this period, dry weather conditions could be the cause of the near disappearance of Polylepis forests. From 3000 years BP the vegetation is similar to that observed today. The development of cultivated terraces is evidenced by the increase of taxa cultivated from 2215 years BP cal. Around 1000 years BP, a strong drought is connected to the construction of irrigation canals.
