Book Description
Today, the Senegalese urban framework raises the question of the weak dynamics of secondary cities. The book, which presents the results of a Ph.D. thesis in geography supported in 1991, examines the role of colonial peanut milking stops in the process of urbanization. It is organized into four chapters. The first deals with the concept of Escale, founder of colonial urbanization, methods and tools for investigation and analysis of data from a wide variety of sources. In the second, the analysis of the mechanisms of formation and hierarchy of localities shows the emergence of Kaffrine and Koungheul. The third is devoted to the inscription of this evolution on the space of the localities and their hinterland. The fourth chapter is devoted to the roles of communication networks on dynamics and urban reinforcement as structuring factors of the relations between cities and towns with their hinterland. In conclusion, the book highlights the effect of the coherence between the political vision and the spatial planning acts on the evolution of human settlements.
