Book Description
The Drâa valley is a string of oases located in southeastern Morocco, in an arid climate. Water resources are therefore rare. Agriculture is totally dependent on irrigation. The traditional system of water sharing, which still structures the landscape today, has been superimposed on a modern, unsustainable network. Recently, this region has experienced a strong tourist development. But the needs of tourists are far behind those of the population. To meet the expectations of their customers, hotels consume water - especially drinking - in abundance. The study shows that tourists are unfamiliar with the context, but are sensitive to water saving issues. Overall, hoteliers seem unaware of this rarity. Hotel guests do not find there information that could lead them to reduce their consumption somewhat. The proposed solutions are of two types: better information of hoteliers on the technical means to save water and awareness campaigns targeted to hoteliers and tourists to raise awareness of the need to adapt water consumption to the conditions of the region.
