Book Description
The professionalization of pediatrics in Gabon goes back to the colonial period with the evolution of conceptions of the sick child from those of colonial doctors, missionaries and nurses from the cradle to those of postcolonial Gabonese political authorities. pediatrics have been redefined by setting up teaching and research structures. Currently, despite the improvement in the conditions of hospitalization of children and the modernization of health care facilities, Gabonese pediatricians are practicing their profession in a deficit of materials and are receiving wages deemed lower than their level of training. These difficult working conditions lead them to take various paths to improve their social situation. This is how some engage in politics while others open clinics. These trajectories show that the identity of Gabonese paediatricians is very dynamic. The introduction of the health record in pediatric consultations and the use of prescriptions led to misunderstandings and tensions between pediatricians and families.
