Book Description
Nomads in northern Mali have for a long time challenged the policy of the state considering the sedentarization as the basis of their integration and development. It results from two major events that affect the functioning and the structuring of the social and economic life of the nomads. These are, on the one hand, the adverse effects of the 1984 drought and, on the other, the realization, with the support of NGOs and development projects, of many socio-economic infrastructures to accompany peace in a region weakened by the rebellion of the 90s. If sedentarisation is justified by a socio-economic imperative, the environmental reality forces mobility, a guarantee of livestock development which remains the dominant and most viable production system. But, the priority of socio-economic development in relation to the environmental issue undoubtedly poses risks for the nomads' future. This future will also face the uncertainties of recurrent insecurity and major development projects, including the Taoussa dam, as well as exploration and potential oil exploitation.
