Book Description
In our latitudes with a temperate climate, the impact of frost-related geomorphological phenomena is less spectacular than in more northerly regions. However, two forms of ground ice have been observed several times in the banks of a meandering sector of the Vaux-Chavanne stream: pipkrakes and segregation ice. The analyzes carried out during this work allowed to identify the various facets of their erosive impact: the granulometric characteristics most favorable to their development, the volume of disintegrated material, the receding of the banks and its part in the annual erosion, the erosive consequences of the combination between ice formation and fluvial training, and finally the modifications of the course of the river always via the conjunction of these processes. Otherwise, the conditions of appearance of this type of ice were apprehended via temperature readings. It was able to deduce the probable frequency of occurrence of segregation ice over a multi-year period in the study area. Growth rates of pipkrakes could also be estimated.
