Book Description
Most theoretical debates about the universality of human rights and democratic relevance in non-Western societies are ultimately based on a cultural and identity-based reading of the law. In this sense, the universal reach of human rights would be undermined by the fact that non-Western societies would not be able to recognize the legitimacy of the law, except at the cost of the loss of their specific identity. From the study of social representations of human and child rights conducted in Jordan, however, it emerges that neither religion nor the "collective" social structure nor even, to a large extent, traditional social divisions are incompatible. with a positive conception of rights.
