Book Description
This book studies the causes of the degradation of biodiversity in the Gamba Complex in Gabon. In this region, two protected areas emerge during colonization. Between 1960 and 1998, six new protected areas were created. The studied territory is rich in biodiversity because of favorable physical conditions, the diversity of the environments, the under-population, the deficit of infrastructures and the weight of the oil in the economy. Here, the degradation of biodiversity results from the practices of social groups and the lack of institutions. Localities in and outside the study area participate. Economic activities cause nuisances on biodiversity. Indebtedness, devaluation and plans for These adjustments lead to over-exploitation, which is aggravated by land-use planning and financing that is not adapted to the needs of protected areas. In addition, globalization is forcing this space to supply the world market with oil, fish and tourism. International aid minimizes the damage, but reduces the capacity of the state to manage this territory.
