Book Description
This master's research examines the effects of current repressive management on street youth in Montreal, leading more and more to incarceration stays, often for non-criminal reasons such as non-payment. fine. The main objective of this study is to understand the effects that prison experience can have on the identity construction of these young people. Our analysis is based mainly on Bajoit's (1997) theory of relational self-management and on the works of Chantraine (2004), Kokoreff (2004) and Otero, Poupart and Spielvogel (2004). It allowed to see how the identity transformations vary according to the relation of the individual to his detention, going from the maintenance of the pre-incarceration identity to the major repositioning of identity. Three types of reports were identified among the respondents: the unavoidable incarceration, marked by a confinement routine and street life; incarceration parenthesis, marked by enveloping drug addiction and prostitution; and incarceration bifurcation, marked by a change of lifestyle or "career."
