Book Description
This book reports on an empirical study conducted on evaluation in six Local Agendas 21 in the Nord-Pas-de-Calais region of France. Local Agenda 21s originate from Agenda 21 - a document that emerged from the Rio Conference on Environment and Development (1992) - and aim to achieve sustainable development at the local level. In this book, we present the evaluation experiences of selected Local Agenda 21s and analyze how they evaluate sustainable development. We then study these evaluation experiments in terms of theoretical elements in order to characterize them and to define divergences and / or methodological convergences among the different experiments. The analysis of these experiments showed that the Traditional assessment coexists with several types of sustainability assessment. There is therefore no consensus on how to evaluate sustainable development, but some trends can be observed. Moreover, the same concept of Local Agenda 21 may differ from one experience to another, inducing a noticeable difference in the type of evaluation used.
