Book Description
Cultural sport psychology (CSP) is a branch of sport and exercise psychology which helps sports participants and social scientists to gain an understanding of marginalized identities, and seek solutions to challenges such as exclusion, miscommunication, and ineffective sporting practice. The chapters in this book open up the field of applied sport psychology practice and CSP research to include less mainstream sports such as martial arts, circus arts, extreme sports, and dance. Instead of defining culture in terms of race, ethnicity, and nationality. This book extends the discussion to the sub-cultural level, in terms of the particular sports featured, and how athletes, coaches and teams interact via normative behaviours within the performance context. Each chapter will contain a review of the current literature, a discussion of key issues, actual sporting case studies as well as conclusions and possible future research ideas. The book is ideal reading for sport and exercise academics and practitioners, as well as advanced undergraduate and postgraduate students of applied sport psychology, cultural sport psychology and related fields such as critical studies, sociology, cultural studies and social anthropology.
