Book Description
This book deals with the phenomena of propagation of pressure waves in the intake and exhaust systems of internal combustion engines. The latter consist of tubular elements interconnected by different types of singularities (elbow, collector, butterfly housing, ...) that affect the shape of the waves generated by the opening and closing of the valves. The goal is to be able to simulate the operation of a complete engine by one-dimensional modeling. The first step is based on the determination of the numerical scheme best suited to solving the equations of gas dynamics. Then, each of the singularities is characterized by a study by means of a CFD calculation code accompanied by an experimental validation. The all developed models are then integrated into a simulation software for the operation of the engines. Final validation is performed by comparison with measurements made on a test engine. The software thus obtained is presented as a means of analyzing the phenomena observed at the test bench, but also assistance in the design and optimization of internal combustion engines.
