For solar physics, there are magnitudes that make it possible to validate the models whose object is the representation of the physical phenomena of which the Sun is the seat. Among these quantities are the diameter, the asphericity and the shape of the limb. The measurement of the solar diameter has been undertaken since the middle of the 17th century. Pursued until now by different instruments placed on the ground, under stratospheric balloons or in orbit, the results are not coherent. An analysis of the possible causes of these disagreements has been carried out. Among these, in addition to the instrumental characteristics, the treatment methods are likely to introduce bias in the results. Algorithms have been developed to process solar images that, applied to the data of the Solar Disk Sextant instrument (SDS), have shown their accuracy and efficiency. This work resulted in a measurement and processing strategy that was useful to the PICARD mission.
