Book Description
For four decades, Congolese households have been contributing financially to the schooling and health care of their dependent children. Current social policies reveal greater household responsibility following the gradual withdrawal of the Congolese state from social sector financing. Basic services including schooling and children's access to health care become less affordable for poor households. Conversely, the expected results are not always satisfactory. Readers will discover that inequalities in access to these basic services are no longer necessarily linked to the often insufficient supply, but also to the differentiation of the characteristics of households and children within them. Apart from the classic inequalities in favor of boys and urban children in terms of schooling and access to health care, this book reveals other inequalities resulting from the differentiation between provinces, generations, kinship ties with head of household, etc. This study should contribute to the development of more efficient education and health policies.
