The French presence in Mayotte dates from 1841, when it was ceded to France by Sultan Andriantsouli. In 1998, more than a century and a half later, the population qualified as illiterate in French is estimated at more than 55%. In view of the social, economic and cultural changes that Mayotte has known since its attachment to France, does literacy as practiced in the island still fulfill its socialization mission? Faced with the phenomenon of illiteracy considered a scourge, our purpose is to study the personal and socio-cultural causes of the inability to learn among literacy audiences, when the conditions for success of the action are supposed to be met.
