Book Description
What are parties in the view of party research and how they function as democratic entities, this is the subject of this investigation. While what party-political critics generally refer to as a democratic party is a true reflection of that reality, as it appears in western party democracies, it is astonishing to see how little party research unanimously agrees with the actual functions, structures, and behaviors of parties to say yes. The cause of this has to do with the state of this branch of science. For what he yields to empirical and theoretical achievements often obeys the mastiiben and imperative paradigmatic thinking of three research traditions rather than the found reality. Against this background, the present study examines in a first part the hitherto insufficiently revealed controversy about the question of which alternative democratic-theoretical frame of reference should be used and on the basis of which disputed premises and problem views party research should be conducted. In a second part, she uses typical statements in party literature on the conceptual, functional, typological and structural characteristics of parties in democracy to take stock of the problematic level of discussion and the theoretical power shortage of party research. The investigation leads to the result, since this branch of science usually proves to be overstretched against its very own object of knowledge
