20 Constructive social work 20 23 Central themes in constructionism 23 27 The postmodern turnaround 27 33 Conclusions 33 Curiosity. With me it evokes 'compassion'; it evokes the care you have for what exists and can exist; a willingness to see the unusual in our environment; with a certain solidarity to break down our self-evidence; a passion to understand what has happened and happened; a nonchalance with respect to the traditional hierarchy of the important and the essential. (Foucault, 1989, 198) Introduction The goal of this opening chapter is twofold. First we indicate what we mean by constructive social work and what we see as central elements. Secondly, we discuss a number of visions that are part of constructionism and that form the basis for the development of constructive social work in practice. To this end we discuss why we are involved in this at all. Why is a constructive approach needed in modern social work? It is exaggerated to speak of a crisis in social work (Clarke, 1993), but social work has had a lot of criticism in recent years and it is undergoing major changes (Parton, 1996; 1998a). Executing workers in particular are faced with an increasing number of rules and procedures relating to goals, results, regu- lations and reports. These rules put pressure on their professional skills and work morale.
