Book Description
The coastal zone studied is located in West Africa in the Gulf of Benin between the mouth of the Volta in Ghana and that of Mono in Benin. The bulk of economic resources, cities and the capital Lome are located on this low coastal fringe which concentrates 30 to 45% of the total population. The pressure of the issues continues to grow, unleashed by population growth. The area of land that will disappear by erosion is estimated between 8.91 Km² and 55.21 Km², or 0.31% to 1.91% of the studied area, while the area at risk of flooding is estimated between 50 Km² and 1274.43 Km², or 1.7% to 44.1% of the study area. This sector has a very high vulnerability. With regard to the population living in the targeted areas as vulnerable to flooding and erosion, the numbers are estimated at 1 000000 hbts. But the populations at risk would reach more than 2.5 million because of the rupture of the economic chain that these environmental upheavals would entail. Another form of vulnerability is saline intrusion into groundwater. The economic costs were also evaluated.
