There is a story behind the founding of all libraries; the story of thought and knowledge recorded and preserved.
Ours begins with the late Sheikh Rashid Bin Saeed Al Maktoum, ruler of Dubai from 1958 to 1990 (may God rest his soul). A man of extraordinary vision, Sheikh Rashid's desire to provide the citizens and residents of Dubai with a centre of culture and knowledge resulted in the creation of Dubai Public Library. The first Dubai Public Library saw the light of day in 1963. Located in Al Ras, overlooking the banks of Khor Dubai (Dubai Creek), it ushered a fresh wave of culture and knowledge into the city.
As Dubai grew in stature as a commercial hub, steps were taken to match that growth culturally. The late Sheikh Maktoum Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai & Deputy Prime Minister at that time and H.H. Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Minister of Finance and Industry, President of Dubai Municipality issued instructions for the introduction of more libraries throughout the city.
Accordingly, in 1989, new libraries were inaugurated around the city in the busy and bustling communities of Hor Al Anz, Al Rashidiya, Al Safa and Umm Suqeim, with a library opening in Hatta in 1998. In 2007 the Dubai Public Library's Al Twar branch was opened, and more recently, in 2012, the Al Mankhool branch of the library network opened. Over the years the Dubai Public Library has been able to successfully design, develop and deliver a range of unique services, which have helped it to become a highly regarded practical and reliable reference library in the GCC and the Arab region. It is prominent attraction in lives of a sizeable proportion of Dubai residents.
The Dubai Public Library network includes eight libraries for adults and another seven for children, as well as multi-purpose halls, classrooms. All branches of the Dubai Public Library are connected via computer systems and have links with other modern libraries, providing access to vast sources of information and knowledge on an immense diversity of topics in both Arabic and English.
